Setting Up A Winter Strategy For Driveway Maintenance.

24.09.2018
With summer over, the days have grown shorter and the cold has creeped in. Winter is a time where freezing temperatures can damage your driveway, leaving behind cracks and holes. This may lead to costly repairs and damage the overall look of your home. Snow is also hazardous, hiding ice beneath the surface. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to maintaining your driveway during winter. We’ve come up with a guide on how to deal with the colder months.

Preventative measures

Before frost sets in, there are a number of ways you can protect your driveway:
  • Fill any cracks you notice on the surface to stop water from getting in. This prevents the risk of water freezing and expanding in the space.
  • It’s also a good idea to seal hard surfaces to lower the risk of water freezing.
  • Invest in a rubber-edged snow shovel rather than metal. The latter can damage a driveway.

Winter preservation

After your driveway starts to get icy, there are several measures to take to make sure it’s protected. Pick a suitable deicing material A common material for thawing out a surface is rock salt, but this should be avoided if possible. Traditional rock salt has been linked to corrosion, breaking down a surface over time. It’s better to use calcium chloride, calcium magnesium acetate or potassium chloride. They work in lower temperatures and cause less surface damage. Shovel in the right way Providing you choose to use a shovel to clean up your driveway, be sure to use the correct posture. Keep the utensil close to your body as you’re lifting snow, using your legs instead of your back. You also don’t want to snow sticking to the shovel, so be sure to spray it with a liquid that can keep the end clean. Put a mat down It’s worth setting down a map outside your front door to capture any deicer. This will lower the amount of snow that’s tracked into the house.
